When Hiroki Matsumoto first visited Artefact in 2017, he treated us to an exceptional range of teas smoked with various woods: cypress, pine, cacao, cherry, and even shavings from Japanese whisky barrels. The latter two woods particularly caught our attention. After our tasting, the verdict was unequivocal: Hiroki had truly created something unique. These teas were beautiful to behold and incredibly complex in the cup. They were nothing like traditional pine-smoked teas, which are often harsh, powerful, and have a very limited aromatic profile. These teas, handcrafted in Japan, truly have something to say: a full, rounded bouquet, a beautiful persistence, and above all, a perfect balance between the tea's flavor and the smokiness.
